Contraceptive Implant

Important information about your Contraceptive Implant appointment

To avoid disappointment please read this before attending for your appointment.

Before the contraceptive implant is inserted we must be certain that you are not pregnant. Please ensure that when you arrive for your appointment you can say yes to ANY ONE of the following:

  • I have taken pills/patch/ring correctly for the past 3 weeks (no missed or late pills/patch/ring).
  • I am using condoms and have not had unprotected sexual intercourse.
  • I am currently using the contraceptive injection, intrauterine contraception (IUD/IUS) or implant and it has not expired.
  • I am on day 1 – 5 of my cycle.
  • I have ABSTAINED (not had sexual intercourse) since my last period.

Important Information about your appointment:

Your appointment will be booked for 20 minutes. Please arrive on time.

The nurse or doctor will check your medical history and assess your suitability for fitting on the day. If you are not suitable for fitting your appointment will be re-booked and your fitting postponed till it is suitable to proceed. This is for your medical safety and well-being.

Please do not bring children with you on the day of your procedure.

Contraceptive Coil

Important information about your IUD or IUS procedure

To avoid disappointment please read this leaflet before attending.

Before the IUD (intrauterine device copper) or IUS (intrauterine system hormonal) is inserted

we must be certain you are not pregnant or at risk of pregnancy. Please ensure that when you arrive for your appointment you can say yes to ANY ONE of the following:

  • I have taken pills/patch/ring correctly for the past 3 weeks (no missed or late pills/patch/ring).
  • I am currently using the contraceptive injection or implant and it has not expired.
  • I have used condoms consistently and correctly for the past 3 weeks
  • I have an IUD or IUS in place already which has not expired and I have ABSTAINED (not had sexual intercourse) for 7 days before the procedure.
  • I have ABSTAINED (not had sexual intercourse) since my last period.

On the day of your procedure appointment:

  • Do not bring any children with you
  • You may be asked to produce a urine sample
  • Make sure you have eaten before you attend
  • Take painkillers at least half an hour before your appointment
  • Most people are fine after the procedure but make sure you can arrange for a friend / partner to accompany you home if you do not feel well afterward

You may be asked to wait in the waiting room for 10 minutes after the procedure.
